Cleveland High School boys' and girls’ wrestling teams are gearing up for another exciting journey to the state championships following a historic year in 2023.
Under the leadership of head coaches Joey Knox, heading into his seventh season with the boys’ team, and Josh Bosken, currently in his third season leading the girls’ team, Cleveland High School's wrestling program continues to reach new heights.
Last year, these teams made history by becoming the first to win both the duals and the traditional TSSAA Class AA State Tournament. This achievement was not only historic for the school but marked the first time it has happened in the country. Building on this success, the teams have had the opportunity to travel and grow on a national level by competing in tournaments in Florida, Indiana, and Pennsylvania this season.
The Cleveland High School boys wrestling team has won 135 consecutive dual matches, which is the longest winning streak of any high school sport in Tennessee. Coach Knox, emphasizing the team's commitment to excellence, remarked, "We’re always trying to improve in every aspect of the program; we want to continue to climb in those national rankings.”
The girls’ wrestling team, led by Coach Josh Bosken in his third season at the helm, has achieved remarkable success throughout the 2023 season. Coach Bosken shared his perspective, stating, "Regardless of the success we had in the previous year, we’re going to try to set the bar a little higher. This year, they're set on doing whatever it takes to win again." Their dedication to continuous improvement and unwavering determination make them formidable contenders on the state stage.
The entire Cleveland High School community rallies behind the wrestling teams as they embark on this exciting journey to Franklin this weekend. The support from parents, faculty, and fellow students has been instrumental in the teams' achievements and will undoubtedly continue to fuel their drive at the state championships.
In anticipation of the state championships, Cleveland High School welcomes the community to join in sending off our wrestling teams. The send-off will take place at Raider Arena on Friday, February 2, at 10:20 a.m. We invite everyone to come and show their support as our talented athletes start their journey to make history once again at the state championships.
